Business Writing Toolkit

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • review the basic principles underlying business writing in general
  • make the right choice between e-mail and more conventional business documents
  • review and enhance their business writing skills

Programme Outline

Getting the basic tools together:

  • Correct and appropriate language: use of dictionaries and spell-checkers
  • Clear and readable layout: getting rid of old typing habits, avoiding an overdose of fancy presentation gimmicks

Writing to express, not impress:

  • Identifying the reader’s information needs: primary, secondary and multiple audiences
  • Presenting the message in a logical and persuasive manner

Using e-mails appropriately:

  • Avoiding the chat trap: use of abbreviations, emoticons and colloquial language
  • Choosing the right level of formality
  • Getting the structure right: subject lines, salutations, closes and signatures
  • Using attachments

Handling tricky situations:

  • Remedying customer service issues
  • Addressing personnel issues
